The Times notes in its coverage yesterday how both fans and former members of the Cardinals "family" have mixed feelings about McGwire and his legacy. Former Cardinals slugger Jack Clark and manager Whitey Herzog have both publicly denounced McGwire.
Now Herzog seems to be stealing a line from "Big Mac". The former Cardinals skipper doesn't want to talk about the past.
Speaking at an awards ceremony last month in Wisconsin, Herzog had this to say of McGwire:
"The people in St. Louis give Mark McGwire a standing ovation the other day, and Jack Clark said every steroid user should be banned for baseball, and they booed him. Now, what the hell is the matter with society when that happens?"By contrast, here's how Herzog responded when the Times came calling last week to ask him about his position on McGwire:
Herzog, whose Hall of Fame plaque will depict him wearing a Cardinals cap, did not want to revisit that topic when he was approached last week in the driveway of his suburban St. Louis home. "I don't want to talk about that," he said, closing the garage door behind him.
