Wild Times in Cahokia: Masked Molesters, a Giant Leap of Faith and a Dead Body

Of this, we are reasonably sure: No Cahokia police officer complained to his spouse yesterday that he was bored at work. Tuesday provided just too much action, especially for those cops working the overnight shift.

Events got underway around 2 a.m. August 16 when police were called to a home for a domestic disturbance and saw the suspect speed off in a vehicle. Cahokia police gave chase along Route 3, with the suspect eventually crashing his vehicle on the Poplar Street Bridge. As the Belleville News-Democrat reports, police then watched as the suspect jumped off the bridge.

The only problem? He wasn't over the Mississippi River when he made the leap. The paper reports that he fell 100 feet from the approach span before hitting the ground. Somehow he survived and was last listed in stable condition at a hospital.

Then -- just a half hour after that incident -- police got called to a home on Oaktree Street where four masked gunmen burst into the residence and sexually assaulted two girls before stealing a Mercury Marquis (Illinois plates E172767) and fleeing the scene.

Finally another strange discovery yesterday evening just outside Cahokia city limits. Horseback riders on a trail found the body of an unidentified man. No word yet on his identity. Speaking of identity, did Cahokia police ever find that naked gunman from last week?

In other news, the Cahokia Mounds are lovely this time of year. You really should go.
