Some tragic, breaking news this Saturday morning: A Chesterfield father and daughter were killed in a plane crash today in Wildwood that left a large field of debris on Howell Island.

St. Louis county police officials have identified the deceased as Shiv Patil, 41, and his seven-year-old daughter Sonia Patil. The two departed from the Spirit of St. Louis Airport in a Cirrus SR-22 at around 4:50 a.m., police say, headed for Texas and then onward to Arizona. The plane went down just west of the airport, which is located in west county.

Police say a nearby resident reported hearing a large crash.

Authorities have notified family and the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration will perform independent investigations of the crash, police say.
