Alexis Newsome told her story yesterday in a Facebook video that's since gone viral.
Alexis Newsome was on her way home from school yesterday in south St. Louis County when the driver of a red pickup threw a piece of fried chicken in her car window.

The incident happened at Manchester and 141. In a now-viral Facebook video posted by Newsome, the Creve Coeur woman says she was heading east on Manchester Road, about to turn north on 141, when she saw something being thrown from a vehicle driving in the other direction. At the time she says she thought it was eggshells. It caught her off guard, causing her almost swerve and hit the car next to her.

Only after that did she realize it was fried chicken.

“This implies so much negative connotation. Now I have to be upset in front of my child and have to explain why mommy is upset. I don’t want to have to explain this to my five-year-old,” Newsome says. “This is not fair. I was scared.”

Newsome said she posted the video talking about the incident because she wants people to understand what it feels like.

“It’s not easy living in this brown skin, but I want you to understand,” Newsome says in the video.

Manchester Police confirm that they took a report from Newsome.

"We are checking with restaurants in the area in hopes there may be video surveillance which could prove useful," Manchester Police Sgt. Ed Skaggs says in an email. "At this time we don't have much to go on."

In her video, Newsome credits the department with a compassionate response.

She did not respond to our request for follow-up comment; we'll update this post if we hear back.
