St. Louis' Homeless Soccer Team Nets Trophy

Posted By on Mon, Jul 7, 2008 at 1:20 PM

People say St. Louis is a soccer town.

I believe it, based on responses to a story I wrote a few weeks ago about the city's first homeless soccer team.

Apparently, Peter & Paul Community Services has been inundated with offers of support for everything from sneakers, jerseys, equipment, and even more volunteer coaches, for the team (now known as the St. Louis Roadies).

The guys just returned from the Homeless USA Cup in Washington, D.C. with more good news: Their goalie, Oscar Grandberry, was named an alternate to the national homeless soccer team. That squad will travel to Melbourne, Australia, later this year, for the sixth annual Homeless World Cup. Watch a video interview with Grandberry.

The St. Louis Roadies also captured the Homeless USA Cup’s Fair Play Award for ''showing the best in human spirit and embodying what the tournament is all about.''

They finished third in the beginners' bracket of the tournament and eleventh overall. Our midwestern neighbor, Minneapolis, took the title trophy. (A run-down of the tournament can be found here.)
