An editorial in the Washington University Student Life newspaper has caused something of a furor among supporters of divisive Islamic scholar Robert Spencer

Spencer -- the author of eight books including The Truth About Muhammad and The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam -- is scheduled to speak tonight on campus. A student group called the Conservative Leadership Association is sponsoring the talk.

In its editorial yesterday, the staff at the Student Life coached its readers on how to respectfully listen to Spencer and then challenge his anti-Islamic arguments which "have the potential to stir up hatred and bigotry."

Spencer apologists quickly latched onto the editorial, leaving twenty comments on the Student Life Web site. Spencer later responded to the editorial on his own Web site, JihadWatch.org, prompting another 150-plus comments from his supporters.

Student organizer Caleb Posner with Conservative Leadership Association now claims in his own blog that Spencer's talk has been moved from Graham Chapel to Lab Sciences Room 300 due to "credible security threats."

Posner could not be reached for comment. Meanwhile, Wash U. spokesman Neil Schoenherr tells me that the event was moved simply because the audience was not expected to be large enough to fill the 800-seat Graham Chapel.

Unless you've already RSVP'd, the event tonight at 6:30 is only open to Washington University students and faculty with valid ID.
