Fernando's Big Inning: Ten Years On

Posted By on Fri, Apr 24, 2009 at 3:32 PM

In the Cardinals' win over the New York Metropolitans on Thursday, a ghost from the Cards' past popped up. Fernando Tatis played for the Mets, going 1-2 overall after pinch-hitting in the eighth.

And why is that special, you ask? So what if some ex-Cardinal played in the game yesterday?

Well, yesterday, the 23rd of April, also just happened to be the ten year anniversary of the day that Fernando Tatis became the first, and still the only, player in major league history to hit two grand slams in the same inning. He did it back in 1999 out in Los Angeles, off Chan Ho Park of the Dodgers.

I honestly don't have a whole lot of anything to add about this. Not really much you can say, really, about such a freak happening.

Here's what Tatis had to say after hit made history:

"I can't believe it happened. I did not expect to hit another one. I've never been a home run hitter. I just try to meet the ball. I'm not like Mark McGwire" - Fernando Tatis

Tatis' career since then has been up and down, with more downs than ups, but his name is still etched indelibly on the record books, and may very well remain so for a very, very long time.

So check out the video, and relive one -- well, two, actually -- of the most remarkable moments you're ever going to experience as a baseball fan.
