The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department's internal affairs unit is investigating the theft of "thousands" of dollars from a charity fund.

The St. Louis Police Officers' Memorial Association is a non-profit entity that operates outside of the police department and raises money for an annual breakfast to honor fallen officers.

The police department says it uncovered the missing money from the memorial association during a policy review. A civilian employee -- who once worked as a commissioned officers -- has resigned from the department and indicated involvement in the theft. The police say they're not releasing the suspect's name until charges are filed.

"It's disheartening when those sworn to uphold the law are accused of breaking it but I will continue to make it clear that we should and will be forceful in policing ourselves," said Chief Dan Isom in a statement.
