Leslie Hall, a.k.a. Mother Gem, is a bit of an Internet phenomenon that started on MySpace with the release of her goofy rap songs about crafting and gem sweaters.

Her backup band, the Ly's, is made up of DJ Dr. Laura and Klassy K who play the turntables, keyboards and sing. The group hails from Ames, Iowa, and is currently on tour, traveling the country in a van that also doubles as a gift shop and The Mobile Museum of Gem Sweaters.

A big turnout arrived to see her performance at the Mad Art Gallery on Friday night. The packed crowd sang along and cheered her every golden spandexy move -- a pretty impressive feat considering she's never played St. Louis before.

So, how do you explain Leslie's huge popularity both online and in person? Perhaps it has to do with the resurgent DIY craft movement of recent years. Or maybe it's because she's just so damn sexy.
