Ever wonder how one of Detroit's finest automobiles became the stripped hoopty cruising down Kingshighway?

According to data compiled by a Missouri insurance group, it's because the Show-Me State's car thieves love to swipe rides that were made in the USA.

The most popular target? The highly valuable, ultra-sought after...Dodge Intrepid. Wait, what?

Via the Kansas City Star:

The Missouri Insurance Information Service says more than 20,000 vehicle thefts were reported in the state last year, nearly half of them in St. Louis and Kansas City. Total losses were estimated at more than $140 million.

The five most commonly stolen vehicles in Missouri were the Dodge Intrepid, Ford Taurus, Pontiac Grand Prix, Dodge Stratus and Oldsmobile Cutlass.

The details behind the Insurance group's data are pretty thin. The only additional info on The Star's story was the basic "lock your doors, hide your valuables, blah blah blah" and the study seems to be for paid subscribers only on the group's website.

Naturally this raises all kinds of questions like: Haven't Hondas always been the preferred car for thieves? Are the stats skewed because Missourians tend to drive American, anyway? And are the people stealing Olds Cutlasses the only octogenarian car thieves in the country?
