A Jefferson County sheriff deputy was investigating the theft of some 40 guns this morning when he was ambushed outside a home near Falcon Drive and Highway 67/61, according to the sheriff's department.

The incident occurred around 8:30 a.m. The sheriff's department says its officers were attempting to search a storage shed on the property when Zachary Walck, 17, began firing at the deputies from inside the shack.

Cpl. Jerry Williams was shot once in the wrist. Other officers returned fire, striking Walck twice in the chest.

No word on Walck's current condition.
