For those of y'all interested in midwifery and at-home births: a federal study released Wednesday says that the percentage of home births in Missouri was significantly above the national average from 2005 to 2006. (We presume such data takes a loooong time to gather).

Furthermore, Missouri showed a higher percentage of home births compared to all other neighboring states except Iowa (which was just slightly higher).

Keep in mind, by the way, that the actual numbers of home births we're dealing with are pretty small. For example, only about 1,300 Missouri moms did it, while more than 158,000  -- meaning 99.04 percent -- opted for the hospital.

Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Vermont and states in the Northwest showed the highest percentages of home births.

The Missouri Supreme Court invalidated a statewide ban on midwifery in 2007; check out our feature, "Certified professional midwife: Coming to a yellow pages directory near you" by former RFT staff writer, Kathleen McLaughlin.
