St. Charles County Bans K2, Fake Marijuana

Posted By on Tue, Mar 9, 2010 at 7:33 AM

The St. Charles County Council voted last night to outlaw immediately the sale and possession of fake marijuana products such as K2.

The legislation was introduced Monday evening and -- in a rare maneuver -- voted into law that same night as an "emergency measure." The council unanimously agreed (7-0) that products such as K2 -- an herbal mix laced with a synthetic drug that mimics the effects of marijuana -- pose a health hazard and must be dealt with immediately.

The ban extends to all municipalities within St. Charles County.

The handful of retailers that sell fake marijuana in the county are to be delivered notice today of the ban. The law went into effect last night, though penalties for violating the ban won't be enforced for 30 days at which point violators could receive fines up to $1,000 and one year in jail.

Meanwhile, efforts are afoot in Jefferson City to ban the sale and possession of fake marijuana statewide. Last month rural Pettis County in mid-Missouri became the first county in the state to outlaw fake pot.
