The skeleton found outside Columbia this weekend has been identified as Ronald Elic, of Overland, Kansas.

A 13-year-old discovered Elic's remains Saturday in the woods outside Boone County Jail. Authorities say Elic was a prisoner in the jail last summer, serving a seven-day term for passing bad checks.

The Columbia Tribune reports today that Elic was released from the jail July 15. He was identified from the wristband he was issued during his jail sentence. Elic's family had not known his whereabouts for months.

Based on his clothing and the decay of the remains, described as "90 percent skeletal with little skin tissue," it's believed Elic had been dead since the summer.

Metal wires in his chest suggest that he may have had open-heart surgery.

Anyone with information about Elic or his cause of death is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 573-875-8477 or the Columbia police department at 573-874-7652.
