Ed Martin: Carnahan and Obama Want to Deny You God

Ed Martin: Holier than thou.
  • Ed Martin: Holier than thou.
So this is what it's come to? On Monday Republican candidate Ed Martin was on the "Dr. Gina Show" on 630 AM KJSL when the conversation with his fellow Tea Party patriot, Gina Loudon, turned to religion.

As Martin puts its, one of the objectives of the incumbent he's hoping to unseat -- Congressman Russ Carnahan -- is to deny Americans the chance to find the Lord. Per Martin:
And that's one of the things that's most destructive about the growth of government. It's this taking away of that freedom. The freedom -- the ultimate freedom, to find your salvation, to get your salvation. And to find Christ, for me and you.

And I think that's one of the things that we have to be very, very aware of. That the Obama Administration and Congressman Carnahan are doing to us.
Late yesterday afternoon, Carnahan issued a statement saying this time his G.O.P. challenger had "crossed the line."

Per Carnahan:
"It is shameful that Ed Martin would use faith to divide rather than unite. This is a baseless attack on my faith and my family.

"My own Christian faith has guided me throughout my life. My wife and I have raised our family with the strong values faith has taught me including service to the community, standing up for civil rights and working to protect religious freedom for all faiths.

"Ed Martin's campaign of personal destruction and fear mongering reveals much more about his true character than anything else. This attack demonstrates his willingness to say or do anything to score political points. Ed Martin has crossed the line and this new low is exactly the kind of campaigning that turns voters off from the importance of public service."
(Note: Ed Martin responds to Carnahan and his "limousine liberals" here.)

As Fired Up Missouri reminds us yesterday, this is not the first time Martin has accused the Carnahan family of heresy.

Last year, Martin was caught on tape warning his fellow Republicans that Carnahan's sister, Robin Carnahan (Missouri's Secretary of State and a Democratic candidate for Senate) does the "devil's work." Per Martin:
If you don't know this, you need to know this one thing: The Secretary of State in Missouri is the most anti-life, most obstructionist, most unpleasant, and one of the smartest people in public life in America right now.

She is very, very devious. She does -- with a, with a clever hand -- she does the devil's work [inaudible]. It is easy when you see someone who is a terribly unpleasant, you know, nasty, hateful person, you say, "Well the devil's got a hold of that person."
Crooks and Liars has audio of Martin discussing Russ Carnahan and religion with Gina Loudon.

Audio of Martin's allegations against Robin Carnahan can be heard at Talking Points Memo.
