Happy Fiscal New Year!!

Posted By on Fri, Oct 1, 2010 at 9:08 AM

Today, October 1, marks the first day of the fiscal year, or, as the kids in the hood call it, FY'11. Thanks to the U.S. Congress, the government didn't completely shut down at midnight. A miracle!

In a late-night vote (12:15 a.m. EST) Wednesday night, the House voted on a continuing resolution that will continue to fund the government until a budget is finalized and approved. (The Senate voted to approve the continuing resolution a few hours earlier on Wednesday.)

Our beloved representatives and senators won't be back until after the November midterm shitshow election, where many of them will come back as lame ducks. The drama of the late night vote was somewhat marred, however, because if there's one thing we all know about elected officials, it's that when they're on the brink of vacation, they want nothing more than to get the hell out. There was no chance the CR wasn't going to be passed eventually.

Our very own Sen. Claire McCaskill was quoted saying that "there was relief in the room" when all was said and done and Congress could pack its bags for a month-long fall break.

Here are some things Congress didn't get done before their recess.
-Don't Ask Don't Tell repeal
-Recess appointments
-All kinds of stuff

Here are a few things they'll (presumably) work on come November:
-Tax cuts!
-The appropriations bills that, uh. Fund the federal government.
