St. Louis County Gets Crisis Line for Teens

Posted By on Fri, Oct 8, 2010 at 9:52 AM

Here's a follow-up (of sorts) to yesterday's story about a march through the Central West End in recognition of several gay teenagers nationwide who've committed suicide recently.

Yesterday, St. Louis County unveiled a new hotline exclusively designed for youth 19 and under -- gay or straight -- who are wrestling with depression, drugs and alcohol, abuse, homelessness or thoughts of suicide.

The Youth Connection Helpline can be reached by calling 314-628-2929 or 1-877-928-2929. The service also plans to provide assistance via text messaging at 4HLP to 31658.

Funding for the program is specifically targeted for county residents, though a manager at Youth Connection tells Daily RFT they wouldn't turn away teens calling from the city or other areas of metro St. Louis.

On its website, St. Louis City offers a Gay and Lesbian Hotline at 314-367-0084 and St. Louis Lesbian & Gay Anti-violence Hotline at 314-826-7067, however neither number was working when checked this morning. The city also offers the number of Life Crisis Services at 314-647-4357. That number does work.
