Anti-gay hate mongers from Fred Phelps' Westboro Baptist Church were repulsed from a funeral by about half the small town of Weston in Platte County on Saturday.

The people in the town got wind of the Westboro hate group's plan to protest the funeral of 34-year-old Sgt. First Class C.J. Sadell, who died from injuries sustained in Afghanistan.

The group pickets military funerals with signs bearing sentiments like "God Hates Fags," somehow attempting to draw a connection between soldiers dying in Iraq and Afghanistan and what they call a too-permissive culture toward lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. They say the deaths of American soldiers are caused by a vengeful god mad about LGBT people, and not, for instance, the guns and bombs of enemy combatants.

Sadell left behind a wife and two sons.

Weston resident Rebecca Rooney spoke to Fox4kc.com.

"We got everybody here early so we could take up all the parking spots," the web site reported her saying. "We did that so Mr. Phelps wouldn't have a contingency that was really close. I'm glad they left, but I'm sad they came."
