Babies Saving Lives!

Posted By on Wed, Nov 24, 2010 at 9:40 AM

Turns out babies aren't just cute. They're also potential medical superheroes.

The Belleville News-Democrat tells us about 9-month-old Ben Alexander Schuetz, whose parents donated his umbilical cord blood when he was born. A few weeks ago, a representative from the St. Louis Cord Blood Bank, which received the donation, called to say that Ben's cord blood was being shipped to a patient with a life-threatening plasma disorder.

Now, baby Ben's parents are touting the ease and helpfulness of donating cord blood, which is otherwise disposed of as medical waste after the birth. However, their donation evangelism serves a dual purpose: Not only are potential lives being saved (cord blood can be used to treat more than 70 pediatric and adult diseases), but Jack, Ben's 3-year-old brother, can now feel like a jerk when he's old enough to understand that his parents didn't know about the procedure, and so didn't bother to donate his cord blood when he was born.

Thanks, Mom. Ugh.
