Blaine Gabbert No. 1 Overall Pick, According to Sports Illustrated Mock Draft

Posted By on Thu, Jan 13, 2011 at 8:34 AM

We know what you're thinking. 1. WTF? 2. What about that other quarterback? You know, Auburn's run-away Heisman/BCS Championship winner, Cam Newton?

College no longer matters. Now it's all about marketing, according to SI columnist Andrew Permloff, who believes Gabbert's star agents (and the decision of Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck to stay in college), could have the Carolina Panthers picking the Missouri quarterback No. 1 as their new gunslinger.

Writes Permloff:
Quarterbacks have gone No. 1 overall eight out of the past 10 years. CAA, which represents Gabbert, has represented seven of the past eight overall No. 1 picks. Despite playing in a spread offense at Missouri, Gabbert is the top-rated quarterback and is the kind of player Carolina could sell to its fans.
As our sister paper in Kansas City opines, the Sports Illustrated's columnist must not have witnessed Gabbert's two costly interceptions in the Insight Bowl. Gabbert, btw, isn't the only Mizzou Tiger that Permloff has going in the first round. He sees defense end Aldon Smith going as high as No. 9 pick to the Tennessee Titans.

And what about Cam Newton? A lowly 16th pick to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
