Comment of the Day: English-Only Driver Exams Doesn't Make Sense

Posted By on Fri, Mar 11, 2011 at 4:24 PM

An article today on the Missouri House passing a bill that would require that driving exams only be administered in English left several readers wondering how that would improve safety.

Reader "John" provides perhaps the best argument when he states:
I love the arguments that it is about being able to read street signs -- when anyone who can read a language using Roman/Latin letters can read a street sign. If I'm looking for Hola street in Spain, I don't have to be literate in Spanish.

If it were about understanding street signs, Missouri would have to stop accepting International Drivers Permits of foreign travelers visiting our state. And start requiring Missourians who wish to obtain an IDP to pass language tests for any country they wished to visit.
