We're not sure why the heck we're reading this in a New York newspaper, but what the heck -- it's juicy enough we're passing it on anyway.

Tommy Adams, sheriff of Missouri's own Carter County, has been arrested on charges of distributing crystal meth. The 31-year-old allegedly gave the drug to an informant -- and snorted some of it himself.

Adams, a Republican, was elected two years ago after his opponent committed suicide just days before the election.

As the Daily News reports, "Investigators noticed that there had been far fewer meth lab busts in the county since Adams took over, and now say they suspect they know why." So -- does that mean the state's new pseudoephedrine database isn't the reason for the drop? Bummer.

Adams, for the record, is now the county's former sheriff: He was replaced by an officer serving as a sheriff until a special election can be held this summer.

The Southeast Missourian reports that federal and state investigations are ongoing.
