Now that authorities have been cracking down on dog-on-dog fighting, will cats be the next victims?

Prosecutors in Madison County, Illinois, have charged 47-year-old Denis Soto with aggravated cruelty to animals, after he allegedly ordered his two German shepherds to attack a cat walking across a vacant lot near his property in Collinsville. The cat died as a result.

"Soto reportedly continued to give the dogs positive verbal commands and praise as they killed the animal," according to a press release issued by the Madison County Sheriff's Office.

After the mauling, two kids reported the act to authorities and were given permission to bury the cat after its owner could not be determined.

Soto is out of jail on $15,000 bail. We tried to reach him at home, but he wasn't around.

Over the weekend, The New York Times ran a report on the growing trend of hiring attack-dog trainers. (We've reported on the phenomenon occurring in north city.)

We understand the value of guard dogs. But training them with stray cats seems kinda low.
