Sunday Times: Go to St. Louis to Drink Budweiser

Question: What do Madrid, L.A., St. Louis, Taboga Island, Panama and Chicago have in common?

Answer: They all were featured destinations on the front page of the travel section of yesterday's New York Times.

And what's the No. 1 draw St. Louis offers for those affluent, urbane, Sunday Times jet-setters?

You guessed it -- breweries!

Sadly, after rightly labeling St. Louis as a beer haven (as if there are folks out there who don't realize that!), the editors failed to offer much in the way of substance.

The article on Page 3 was actually a response to a soon-to-be-married reader from Boston, who wrote a letter to the paper asking where in the Midwest or West she could extend her July honeymoon for a few days. She suggested "breweries," and the editors wasted little column space before directing her toward St. Louis.

But after suggesting that the young couple take a tour through the Anheuser-Busch factory, the editors could offer little else...save a throwaway line about the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum and the (drum roll) Gateway Arch! No mention of Schlafly or Square One or O'Fallon or any of the other micro-breweries that really make us a beer town.

The editors did, however, take time to make this introduction: "Sitting just west of the Mississippi River is an archetypical city of the Midwest, St. Louis."

Gee, thanks. For those of you who have never heard of St. Louis, we're on the Mississippi, we're archetypical, and we drink Budweiser! Nice reporting, New York Times!
