Police attempted to pull over a car driven by Edward Irons, a 34-year-old black man, who was driving the wrong way down a one-way street at 10:30 p.m. last night in the Hamilton Heights neighborhood. According to the police report, Irons lost control of his car and crashed into a fence. He jumped from the car and flashed a semi-automatic weapon with an extended clip, then fired at police. Officers returned fire and the suspect took off running.

While fleeing, Irons was hit at least once by one of the five officers who shot at him. Police found Irons in the street in the 1400 block of Burd Avenue, where he was pronounced dead at the scene. Four of the officers who fired shots were from the Rapid Deployment Unit, the other is assigned to the Seventh District. None of the officers involved were injured.

Police continue to investigate the incident.
