Illinois Prisons to Do Brunch, Not Lunch

No word on if ice cream sandwiches are still on the menu.

Illinois Department of Corrections Chief Tony Godinez presented a plan to the Illinois House of Representatives yesterday that would save the state an estimated $2.5 million a year, according to the Bloomington Pantagraph. Just like your mom and your girlfriend, he's suggesting that the prisoners do brunch on Sunday.
The plan calls for the elimination of breakfast on weekends and holidays in favor of brunch because "Nobody wants to get up at 5 a.m. to eat," according to Godinez. (I don't know about that, Tony; I can always make time for pancakes.)

Illinois needs to cut 9 percent of its prison spending under the new budget, and eliminating breakfast -- a meal many prisoners apparently skip for reasons that escape me -- will go quite a ways toward also eliminating spending on wasted food.
