St. Louis is for the dogs.

A new study from the personal finance site Nerd Wallet says St. Louis is the ninth best city in America for dogs and their owners.

A city needs to be more than just affordable and walkable to qualify as a top city for man & woman's best friend, says Nerd Wallet analyst Sreekar Jasthi. Dogs also need opportunities to play and be social.

Jasthi ranked the 95 largest cities in the U.S. according to three factors: the number of off-leash dog parks per 100,000 residents, the average cost of a trip to the veterinarian and the walkability of the city.

St. Louis ranked above No. 10 Long Beach, California, where taking your dog to the vet costs $7 more on average, and below No. 8 Milwaukee, which has it's own annual festival for dogs called Barktoberfest.

Nerd Wallet named Portland, Oregon, the top spot for dogs and their owners for the second year in a row.

Jasthi calls out local groups for making St. Louis a better place for four-legged friends: Nestle Purina PetCare Company, which actively promotes animal welfare and local pet ownership, is headquartered in Mound City and sponsors the annual pet parade. Stray Rescue of St. Louis rescues abandoned, neglected, sick or abused dogs and finds them adoptive families.
