Way to go, bookworms. Your fervent page-flipping and e-book ingesting has put St. Louis high on's list of the most well-read cities in America.

St. Louis comes in at No. 11 on the list, between No. 12 Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and No. 10 Columbia, South Carolina. Alexandria, Virginia, tops the list of bookish cities for the third year in a row.

Amazon determined the rankings for cities with more than 100,000 residents based on sales data on book, magazine and newspaper sales -- both print and in Kindle format -- from April 2013 to April 2014.

Since 2012 St. Louis jumped up seven spots -- to No. 11 from No. 18 -- in Amazon's annual ranking. (Daily RFT seriously disagreed with St. Louis' low 2012 ranking, so we told Amazon to lick our Balzac.)

Studies from Central Connecticut State University have consistently ranked St. Louis as one of the top fifteen cities for reading since 2005. The university's study looks at factors that Amazon's doesn't, including access to libraries (St. Louis ranked third this year) and access to brick-and-mortar bookstores, not just Amazon's digital marketplace (St. Louis ranked fifth).

Amazon releases its annual well-read-cities list before the summer reading season starts.
