The loyal supporters of the Saint Louis Zoo put up a hell of a fight trying to vote the local gem into the No. 1 spot on USA Today and 10Best's list of the top zoos in the country.

The Toledo Zoo walked away with the top spot, but St. Louis was the runner-up.

USA Today often partners with 10Best to compile click-bait lists, but organizers say the battle to be named America's top zoo was particularly fierce.

"We've never seen ANYTHING like the passion our readers have for their favorite zoo!" writes USA Today (emphasis theirs). "In an historic 10Best Readers' Choice contest category, zoo enthusiasts voted in record numbers -- shattering previous vote tallies by a mile -- in pursuit of seeing their hometown zoo land the coveted No. 1 spot."

St. Louis doesn't need a poll to tell us our free, beautiful, newly updated zoo is the best, but fans made a valiant effort to get our zoo its due.

"Coming in at a very solid No.2 is Saint Louis Zoo, which also had legions of loyal fans voting daily, and even up through the final minutes of the contest," say poll organizers.

The zoo most recently made headlines when a kettle-corn stand caught fire. No creatures, human or otherwise, were injured.
