Eric Greitens is one of four Missouri Republicans jostling to represent the party in the upcoming election for governor, but so far he's the only candidate to wear badass sunglasses while blasting away with a carbine in order to make a big ol' fireball erupt in an empty field.

Let us observe:

Now, Greitens is hardly the first candidate to whip out a cool gun as a campaign prop, or to offer metaphorical promises about "taking aim" and "firing away" at government corruption — but there's actually more to unpack from this ad than just Greitens' aiming stance.

First, the timing of the ad's release is significant, coming the same day that Greitens participated in a live gubernatorial debate hosted by Fox 2

But Greitens has another reason to remind voters that he knows how to wear khaki and carry a weapon: Greitens used to be a Navy SEAL, and it's a fact he never fails to mention in public appearances. His outspokenness, however, aroused the anger of a group of Navy SEALS who chafed at the candidate's willingness to tout his military service on the campaign trail. Earlier this year, the tension sparked a duel of YouTube videos and allegations from Greitens that fellow gubernatorial candidate John Brunner was behind the attacks.

With that background in mind, Greitens' latest TV spot serves as a message to both his opponents on the campaign trail and his former comrades in the SEALS: Greitens won't back down from flexing his image as a consummate military leader, and he's more than willing to wear that badge on his sleeve during this campaign.

Whether that image can convince Missourians to vote for him, well, that's another story completely. Maybe he could add more explosions to the next TV spot? We hear voters love explosions
