Trump Won Last Night's Debate, Says Trump's Missouri Organization

Within minutes of last night's presidential debate at Hofstra University, the consensus among the talking heads was clear: Donald Trump had lost. He started off strong but faded fast, and his contentious attitude did him no favors. Even (some) Fox News commentators were conceding it wasn't Trump's best night.

But at least one group thinks Trump was the clear winner: The Trump/Pence campaign in Missouri. They issued a press release within an hour or so of the debate claiming victory.

The release was short on specifics, treating "Donald Trump's victory in tonight's first Presidential debate" as a matter of fact. Then it went into canned statements from Congressmen Billy Long (R-Springfield) and Jason Smith (R-Salem), praising Trump's acumen. No mention, oddly, of Trump's chronic case of the sniffles.

Tellingly, despite the congressmen's bold victory proclamations, Missouri's GOP standard bearers were silent last night. No word on Twitter from Eric Greitens, the Republican candidate for governor. His Twitter went silent, as did the Twitter accounts of John Brunner and Peter Kinder.

Josh Hawley, the candidate for attorney general, also didn't tweet about the debate. Nor did Senator Roy Blunt (R-Missouri). Trump is apparently so toxic that anyone in a competitive campaign doesn't want to touch him even with faint praise.

But hey, thank God for rural congressmen. Listen to them, and it's clear Trump won this one.
“While Donald Trump clearly won this debate by laying out his vision for rebuilding American greatness, Hillary Clinton reinforced the growing and correct perception that she represents another four years of failed Clinton-Obama policies. Overregulation is the number one complaint I get from all sectors as a congressman and Donald Trump did a great job of hammering this point home. Hillary Clinton’s record is one of making America less safe and less respected across the globe. As recent polling shows, every day more and more Americans are concluding that only a Donald Trump presidency can fix the downward trajectory of the last eight years.” – Congressman Billy Long (MO-7)

“Tonight, Americans were able to see for themselves the stark choice that lies before them this November. On one hand, Hillary Clinton brings nearly 30 years of dishonesty, pandering and failed policies to the table. On the other hand, Donald Trump is a real change agent who has put forward detailed plans to revive our economy, defeat radical Islamic terrorism, and repeal the very real regulations burdening our nation’s farmers, families and small business owners. Donald Trump won this debate because he is the only candidate who effectively laid out a course of positive change for America’s future.” – Congressman Jason Smith (MO-8)

To be fair, we're also on Hillary Clinton's media list, and all we got was a solicitation just before the debate asking for money. But with plenty of Democratic office holders, pundits and basically all of Twitter declaring her the winner, maybe a press release just felt like overkill.

Editor's note: We initially included a tweet from what we thought was Rudy Giuliani's Twitter. Alas, we were taken in by a parody account. Shame on us. We've updated the post accordingly.
