Megan Ellyia Green crushed Jennifer Florida in one of the most-watched races for St. Louis Board of Aldermen.

Unofficial results have Green winning by a ratio of two to one in the 15th Ward Democratic primary against the woman she replaced three years ago.

"This race signifies that we really are ready to pass the torch, and we really are ready to fight for a more progressive future for St. Louis," Green says.

Florida vacated the ward seat in 2014 when she was appointed recorder of deeds. After losing the election to remain in the recorder's office, Florida decided to return to her old stomping grounds. She tried to undercut Green's advantage as the incumbent, campaigning as the rightful representative of the south city ward she served from 2001 to 2014. Even the slogan on her yard signs said "Re-Elect Jennifer Florida."

But Green, who canvassed relentlessly, has raised the profile of the ward, often popping up as a voice in city-wide issues or even beyond, such as the Ferguson protests. The fact that Florida is facing misdemeanor assault charges in Creve Coeur probably didn't help the former alderwoman's bid.

In another much-watched race Tammika Hubbard apparently won easily in the 5th Ward, holding off a crowded field of challengers who circled after the Hubbard family's political power eroded under the cloud of voting irregularities.
