In the summer of 2016, authorities say Edward Crockett, 47, targeted a disabled woman on her daily morning walk through her neighborhood, approaching her with promises of marriage and a baby — even though the woman told him about her disability. She'd previously been deemed incapacitated in a legal proceeding.

Last week, St. Louis County charged Crockett with a felony charge of first-degree rape. According to a police probable cause statement, Crockett allegedly made good on his promise, impregnating the woman.

She has since given birth.

Investigators say Crockett, of the 1500 block of Collins Avenue in Richmond Heights, later made incriminating statements to the victim and her mother.

Crockett also allegedly tried to apply pressure on his alleged victim to stay away from the police investigators, and charging documents accuse of him making "threats against their safety." Crockett's efforts netted him an additional felony for tampering with a victim.

According to a representative with St. Louis County Justice Services, Crockett is not yet in custody.

If convicted of the rape charge, Crockett could face between five years and life in prison. According to state statute, a person found guilty of rape in the first degree is not eligible for a suspended sentence — meaning, no plea deal could replace prison time with probation.
