  • A man in north St. Louis was beaten with a wrench and a shovel, police say.
A man was beaten with a shovel and a wrench when a trio of acquaintances turned on him, authorities say.

The 54-year-old told police he was using drugs on Monday in north city with 58-year-old man, along with a younger guy in his 20s and woman in her early 30s. They four of them began arguing about money, and the afternoon hangout turned into a three-on-one beating, according to police.

The three suspects, armed with hand tools, smashed the 54-year-old in the face, wounding him badly enough that he had to be taken to a hospital. The alleged assault happened about 2:20 p.m. in the 4100 block of Pleasant Street, which is two blocks east of Fairgrounds Park.

The victim told investigators he knew one of the assailants by name, but police haven't released any of the suspects' identities. All three were still at large on Tuesday morning.
