The Cardinals' Rally Cat Is the Best Thing to Happen at Busch Stadium in 2017

Rally Squirrel? So last year. In August 2017, it's all about Rally Cat.

Last night's Cardinals' game at Busch Stadium was interrupted in the bottom of the sixth by a kitten β€” yes, kitten! β€” who charmingly raced across the outfield, bringing play to a halt while a staffer had to retrieve her.

Rally Cat had near-perfect timing for her moment of glory. The Cardinals had the bases loaded, with two outs. The team was trailing Kansas City by just one run, with Yadier Molina at the plate.

And Molina was duly inspired: After play was allowed to resume, he knocked the very next pitch out of the park. Grand slam!

The fans went crazy, and rightly so.

Even the Cardinals got in on the fun, with an apt litter box pun.

That said ...

Taking nothing away from the heroism of Yadi, or #RallyCat herself, to our mind, a third hero was minted in the bottom of the sixth, and that's the Cardinals' employee who got stuck dealing with the pint-sized beast.

The Post-Dispatch has identified him as Lucas Hackmann, and we must say: Rally Cat did not make things easy for him. Just look at those reactions β€” she was positively fighting to keep running, leaving him desperate to hang on.

But never fear, Lucas: You rose to the snarling challenge, and today ... hey, you're a meme!

Still. Last night's 8-5 victory has at least three fathers, and we β€” and all of Cardinals Nation β€” count Lucas Hackmann as one of them.

As for Rally Cat, we're told she's been safely delivered to the Humane Society. No word on how many hapless humans got nipped in the process.

Update at 10:55 a.m.: Last night's broadcast apparently got it wrong. The Humane Society does not have Rally Cat after all. But, they note, they do have other cats, ones that surely every bit as heroic.

Thanks to the alert reader who informed us we'd fallen for fake news. We regret the error.

The Post-Dispatch now reports that Rally Cat was spotted lounging near the Stan Musial statue outside the stadium, but managed to slip away from the enthusiastic fan who attempted to take her home. She disappeared somewhere around Citygarden.
