Please Take a Moment to Appreciate the Sheer Audacity That Is Jeff Roorda

  • Jeff Roorda, a man for all seasons.
He might be the most hated man in St. Louis, but controversial police spokesman Jeff Roorda is not keeping a low profile.

The Ferghanistan author (and political candidate) showed up at the forum unveiling the six finalists for St. Louis police chief last night, resplendent in a look more suited for a hoedown in the Hamptons than someone else's group job interview.

Roorda's duds, coupled with his svelte new physique, couldn't help but evoke a man who has stowed away on a yacht and stolen a Florida cocaine dealer's bugout bag. Yet his thoughtful pose — steepled-hands, furrowed brow — suggest a man who has carefully practiced his poses in the mirror.

Is he a football coach at a community college? A suburban dad about to get lucky after his second divorce? A Margaritaville shift supervisor psyching himself up for the St. Patrick's day rush?

Or, you know, just a casual, fun-loving guy out for a night of merriment with top police brass and a whole bunch of angry protesters?

He's a goddamn maniac, that's what he is. And — deep sigh — he's our maniac, dammit.
