The former sales director at Ameristar Casino St. Charles is suing the casino and its parent company, alleging sex discrimination and retaliation.

Kim Carpenter, who earned a six-figure salary working for the casino, alleges that she was fired after complaining about both sexual harassment and racial discrimination. She says she was subject to a "sexist social atmosphere" and that the casino's general manager became angry at her for booking a nightclub event that involved "primarily black people."

The manager, she alleges, told her that he never wanted her to "book a nightclub event for all black people."

Carpenter says she complained about that directive to a supervisor on April 5. She also spoke to the casino's risk manager about a workers' compensation claim for herself.

The next day, her suit alleges, she was fired. She was told she was not a "good cultural fit." That's despite receiving a positive performance review and a "substantial bonus" just one month earlier, the lawsuit says.

In a statement, David Strow, vice president of corporate communications for Ameristar's parent company, Las Vegas-based Boyd Gaming Corporation, said, "We strongly dispute these allegations. However, given that this matter is the subject of pending litigation, we cannot comment further at this time."

Joshua Pierson, the attorney with Sowers & Wolf representing Carpenter, said he would also have no comment while the litigation in pending.

"We believe in our client and our case," he said.

Carpenter filed suit in December in St. Charles County Circuit Court. The case was transferred to federal court this week.
