  • Arson is to blame for an early morning fire at Kutis Funeral Home, authorities say.

An arsonist set fire to Kutis Funeral Home early Friday morning in south St. Louis County, authorities say.

County police officers on patrol about 4:35 a.m. spotted flames coming from the roof of the building at 5255 Lemay Ferry Road and called the Mehlville Fire Protection District. The firefighters quickly put out the fire and went with police officers to search the building.

In the basement, they found a person sleeping. Police haven't released the person's name, but a spokesman says he is not in custody or a suspect in the fire. No one was injured.

Investigators have found a pair of what police described as "fire-producing devices." Police say they believe they were thrown on the roof.

The St. Louis Regional Bomb and Arson Unit is still investigating. Police say they're considering the fire a possible case of first-degree arson.

They ask anyone with information to call them at 636-529-8210 or CrimeStoppers at 1-866-371-TIPS.
