Saint Louis Ballet has long performed Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker at Christmas, but this year the company goes all out with thirteen performances of the crowd-pleasing classic. In it young Clara receives the gift of a handsome nutcracker, which her brother breaks. When Clara later sneaks downstairs to check on her gift, she discovers an army of attacking mice, led by the Mouse King. Suddenly the nutcracker grows to life-size, and a desperate Clara distracts the Mouse King long enough for her nutcracker prince to defeat the enemy. The duo escape to the Land of Sweets, where much dancing and happy times commence. The Saint Louis Ballet incorporates special effects and grand sets to create a proper holiday spectacle. The Nutcracker is performed Wednesday through Sunday (December 14 to 23) at the Touhill Performing Arts Center on the University of Missouri-St. Louis campus (1 University Drive at Natural Bridge Road; www.stlouisballet.org). Tickets are $35 to $72. $35-$72

New this season - one shorter production (December 19 at 11am only) for very young audience members or students/adults with limited attention spans. Same great dancers, sets and costumes, but the inclusion of narration and a “ no-shushing” atmosphere. (We strongly encourage adults and families with school- aged children to choose one of the traditional evening or matinee performances.) $25

phone 314-516-4949
ticket@umsl.edu

For the very first time, Saint Louis presents one of George Balanchine’s iconic ballets - Rubies. The ruby red costumes and romantic nature of the ballet are well suited to Valentine’s weekend. Performed by major companies throughout the world, Rubies is set to music by Igor Stravinsky and is the “jazziest”, most accessible, and most often performed of Balanchine’s “jewel” ballets. Also featured are two signature works of Chicago’s acclaimed Joffrey Ballet - Reflections and Light Rain by Gerald Arpino. An original work by Gen Horiuchi will complete the program. $34-$59

What does it mean to write your own life-story? For twenty-five years, Wayne McGregor has been making choreography that interrogates life through the experience of the body, moving intelligently in space and time. His practice has been far-reaching and sought out collaborators from a diverse range of artistic and scientific fields to investigate the nature of embodied cognition. Now McGregor turns his attention to the body as archive, as he embarks on a cycle of choreographic portraits illuminated by the sequencing of his own genome. $35-$69

A great comic ballet of the 19th century, Coppélia is the story of a “mad” inventor and the doll he creates that is so life-like the village boy falls in love with it. Coppélia remains as one of the most beloved classical works in the ballet repertory. Based on two stories by E.T.A. Hoffman and with music by Leo Delibes, it is Saint Louis Ballet Artistic Director Gen Horiuchi’s eighth full-length production for the company, closing the mainstage season with wit and charm. $35-$69
