There's nothing more romantic than a late spring wedding, which is exactly why the maid Susana and the barber Figaro plan to get married on a lovely May evening. Their master, Count Almaviva, certainly plans to enjoy himself. The count has a scheme to bed Susana before the wedding, which many would consider poor form. But in Mozart's brilliant comic opera The Marriage of Figaro, the louche nobleman is a horny fool who will be neatly duped by the two lovers, each of whom has their own plan to leave him sitting on his hands. Opera Theatre St. Louis opens its new season with the crowd-pleasing show. The Marriage of Figaro opens at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 25, at the Loretto-Hilton Center (130 Edgar Road; www.opera-stl.org), and is then performed in repertory seven more times through June 19. Tickets are $25 to $192. $25-$192

Rigoletto

Sat., June 1, 8-10 p.m., Wed., June 5, 8-10 p.m., Fri., June 14, 8-10 p.m., Thu., June 20, 8-10 p.m., Sat., June 22, 1-3 p.m., Wed., June 26, 1-3 p.m. and Sun., June 30, 7-9 p.m.

There is no purer love than that of a father for his daughter - and no more impossible task than protecting her from the world. Rigoletto is a bitter court jester who serves the Duke of Mantua, a lecherous womanizer. Together, they are despised throughout the city. But alone, Rigoletto is all tenderness when it comes to his innocent young daughter, Gilda. Little does he know that an ominous curse is about to take its toll. Set to some of Verdi's most powerful music, this tale of innocence lost is wrenchingly poignant and all too human. $25-$129

The Coronation of Poppea

The fight for the throne is never dignified. Poppea will stop at nothing to become Empress, no matter who she has to blackmail, betray, or kill. And Emperor Nero, who is infatuated with Poppea, is not thinking with his head. Separately, they’re bad enough. Together, they will turn Rome upside down. Sexy, bloodthirsty, and unapologetic, this opera is the best kind of political thriller. $25-$129
