CLOSED - The U is a fitting name, given the restaurant's proximity to the Saint Louis University campus, and the sandwich-intensive menu even features a course-catalogue motif. The reuben is at the head of the U's class (though it's not served on the customary rye bread), with the exact right ratio of shaved corned beef to sauerkraut. The chicken ranch club offers a peppery sauce and fried onion straws while the hot Italian beef sandwich pairs very thin meat with banana peppers and spicy, tart giardiniera sauce. Bar hoppers and insomniacs take note: The U is open till 3:30 a.m.
Who's up for corned beef and bibimbap? When you just can't decide whether you want bacon and eggs or steamed veggies and rice, satisfy both cravings at what just might be the world's only combination Korean restaurant/greasy spoon. Mr. and Mrs. Sim, the elderly couple who own the joint, stick to a bare-bones menu: Breakfast is eggs, potatoes and meat (bacon, sausage, ham or corned beef); lunch is grilled cheese or a BLT; and the Korean fare includes the aforementioned bibimbap (veggies and rice) or bulgoki (marinated beef over veggies and rice). But it's all hot, satisfying, damn cheap and made right in front of you, so just shut up and eat.
The Ugly Fish lies in the heart of Dutchtown and offers straightforward bar food. The menu consists of appetizers, burgers, chicken fingers and TJ's pizza. Between bites, guests can select tunes from the jukebox or catch the game on the Ugly Fish's TV.
Late-night dining destination Uncle Bill's (open 24/7) provides night owls with perennial breakfast/diner favorites, including omelets, biscuits and gravy, and, of course, plenty of pancakes. Specials include the 2 x 2 x 2 x 2, which fills a plate with two eggs, two pancakes, two bacon strips and two sausage links. If that won't fill you up, go for the Supreme 2 x 2 x 2 x 2, which adds hash browns to the mix. Always crowded on weekend nights.
