Wave Taco opened in early 2009 on a once-vacant lot just north of Washington Avenue in downtown St. Louis. It imported several tons of white sand from Florida, set up two immaculate outdoor beach volleyball courts and declared its motto to be "shirts optional." Order the house specialty -- a supersweet concoction called the Frozen Margarita Swirl -- at the tiki bar, then try not to stare too hard at the swimsuit-clad coeds frolicking on the faux beach. The only difference between this place and a south-of-the-border hotspot is that the kids are drinking Bud Light Lime instead of Corona with lime.
Technology services, computer repair, meeting and workspace, and food and drink are all to be found in the large Whiz Tech Café located downtown on Locust Street. Open for breakfast, lunch and for those who work late, Whiz Tech offers a full menu of appetizers, soups, salads and sandwiches, including chicken or beef nachos and the "techie" club with smoked turkey, bacon, lettuce, tomato and garlic mayo. Larger fare includes flatbread pizzas and beef hot dogs. Whiz Tech also offers a full coffee menu, featuring lattes, cappuccinos and espressos all made with locally roasted Goshen coffee. Breakfast and desserts are also available in this 6,000-square-foot space with plenty of room for work or relaxation.
