Ya Hala Restaurant, Hookah Bar and Lounge is a restaurant and hookah bar located in St. Charles.
An upscale chain restaurant that doesn't feel like one, Yia Yia's offers a Mediterranean-inspired menu that makes apt use of a wood-fired oven. Pizzas are inventive, and the wood-roasted chicken is superb. The house-made desserts are also worth a go.
Yacovelli's restaurant in Florissant features everyday, casual dining, as well as catering and banquet services, and elegant event hosting. This St. Louis mainstay has floated its location all over the city since 1919, now calling a large banquet hall on Dunn Road, just east of Hanley Road home. Its everyday menu revolves around hearty, classic dishes, including filet mignon, pork chops and spaghetti and meatballs. Yacovelli's also takes pride in its signature fried chicken, offered family-style on Sundays, served with familiar sides such as mashed potatoes, green beans or macaroni and cheese, along with coleslaw and corn bread. Diners can also enjoy early-bird specials and prix fixe dinners for two.
Asian fusion is in the restaurant's name, but these dishes represent only a tiny portion of Yagu's lengthy menu. In fact, Yagu offers everything from Thai tom yum gong soup to Malaysian red curry to "Surf & Turf" to teriyaki to sushi served with a flashing, multicolored light. (Really.) The best dishes tend to be the most basic, including the Malaysian red curry, sweet and mildly spicy. Soups are also excellent, including pork dumplings in a rich, smoky miso broth.
Yaqui's on Cherokee specializes in two things: wine and wood-fired pizza. The latter is owner Francis Rodriguez's own take on the Neapolitan pizza -- a supple, rich crust topped with an anchovy-based tomato sauce and cheese, then baked until crispy yet toothsome at a scorching 800 degrees. Pair one of these fourteen-inch wonders with one of the bar's thirty wines, and you have a recipe for a charming night on Cherokee Street. Yaqui's livens up a classic 120-year-old building, imbuing its brick walls with a casual yet cozy and classy ambiance.
Family-friendly Yellowstone Café is the sister restaurant to Lazy River Grill in Ballwin. The décor focuses on the outdoorsman (expect to see animal heads mounted on the walls) and the fisherman (the owner collects old fishing lures, tackle boxes and other fishing-related knickknacks. But the menu reflects a broader spectrum, with chicken tenders, Buffalo wings and toasted ravioli among the starters. Bigger bites include soups, salads, sandwiches and burgers alongside steaks, pasta, chicken and pork chops. Yellowstone does, of course, serve fish, including walleye and grouper.
Yemanja Brasil preserves the authenticity of Brazilian cuisine as much as possible given the limited availability of the extraordinary fishes, fruits, spices and other raw materials native to South America. Be prepared to duke it out with a few red-hot chile peppers. Feijoada, for example, a stew of pork and black beans that serves as Brazil's national dish, is aggressive enough to sandbag anyone whose palate hasn't been in training. Many of Yemanja's dishes are deep-fried as well as spicy. But Brazil's cuisine is one of the most appealing in the world, and Yemanja does a fine job of introducing us to it.
