Al's Restaurant Just north of the flashy Lumière Place downtown lies Al's Restaurant, which has enjoyed its home along the riverfront for 85 years. The upscale restaurant serves all the perennial favorites, including escargot, lobster tails and steak tartar for starters. Al's only serves dinner, which offers a selection of steaks such as steak Diane and filet mignon or the "Italian Dinner" -- a filet alongside veal parmigiano. Not in the mood for steak? No problem: Al's also offers a variety of veal preparations, pork chops seafood and duck breast among their entrees. Reservations are recommended.
Known for its penchant to host a rowdy concert or two, The Heavy Anchor is part music venue, part watering hole. A thick wall divides the two halves, so the uninterested can drink in peace or join the fray of wild heathens on the music side. The bartenders serve cocktails in Mason jars, Heavy Anchor pins to festive-up that tatty punk jacket, and, just in case your Franzia problem is so out of control that you need a fix even in full view of strangers, boxed wine. The venue itself features a mid-level stage and a full-size sound booth, but it's the kind of place where bands feel comfortable enough to skip the stage and perform on the floor should they so desire. Nautical decor stretches from wall to wall with oceanic artifacts and vibrant paintings including a glaring narwhal and a friendly blue octopus toppling a cityscape with its tentacles. Located near Bevo Mill, The Heavy Anchor is a prime spot for shuffleboard playing with a regulation board and plenty of seating. Additionally weekly festivities include the likes of movie nights and trivia. You'll find local brews on tap, as well as such hometown munchies as Dogtown pizza, Billy Goat chips and Gus' pretzels.
Located on Main Street right near McDonough Street, Old Millstream Inn Restaurant and Beer Garden provides hearty American pub fare in a casual, rustic setting, including a heavily stocked outdoor beer garden. Patrons can enjoy the scenic waterfall rolling on while sitting in the outdoor patio or head inside for a cozy meal. The restaurant reopened in 2008 after a fire, but the kitchen is going again with a selection of appetizers, salads, sandwiches and entrées. Starters include cold artichoke dip with pita chips, crab cakes and mill fries - fried and seasoned whole potatoes, which are also served with each sandwich. Old Millstream serves up a number of different sandwiches, such as a beef dip with Swiss on a hoagie with a side of au jus, and a chicken salad sandwich served on hearty wheatberry bread. Entrées, served after 5 p.m., include a grilled Atlantic salmon and a Gouda-stuffed pork loin, both served with rice and veggies. The restaurant also offers a changing dessert menu of various homemade sweets. Beneath the restaurant, patrons can find the Old Millstream's beer cooler, where they will find 100 different bottled beers in stock and ready to serve.
After a series of bad press and financial difficulties, the team behind Panorama at the Saint Louis Art Museum knew they had to make some changes. As part of their reinvention efforts, they brought in a new general manager, a new chef and changed the menu to better reflect the tastes of St. Louis diners. Their efforts paid off. The new (and much improved) Panorama features dressed-up classic dishes, such as apricot baked brie, beef carpaccio and a grilled chicken Waldorf salad. Panorama’s menu also includes several excellent vegetarian options, such as the hearty Ozark Forest mushroom melt and the zucchini, kale and mushroom platter. The croque-madame, overstuffed with thinly shaved ham and accented with apples and sage, is topped with melted Gruyere, béchamel sauce and an over easy egg for an excellent lunch or brunch option. Panorama’s menu also includes several entrees, such as a Burgundy braised short rib, beef tenderloin and grilled chicken. The vegetarian autumn zucchini, kale and mushroom platter, served over goat-cheese polenta, is a must-try, even for meat-eaters. Panorama serves brunch on Sunday, with a menu that includes smoked salmon benedict and decadent stuffed French toast. With its tasty food, gorgeous setting and stunning view, Panorama is a delicious dining destination.
