    A neighborhood joint that offers pizza in four different styles: St. Louis (naturally), Chicago, New York and New York-Manhattan. That last distinction is crucial: Bite into a massive slice of the greasy, goopy Manhattan-style pizza and you'll swear you're in Brooklyn or Queens. Order anything else and you'll swear you're in Rock Hill, but you'll be happy to be there. A'mis also features a fairly extensive menu of pastas, sandwiches and dinner entrées. A great place to take the family for a weekday diner, and the ideal spot for that lunchtime pizza fix.
    Located right at Gravois Avenue, just south of Russell Boulevard, near I-55, A-1 Wok is a stand-alone Chinese takeout spot in south St. Louis. Diners place their to-go orders, or pick up their carryout, at the counter. A-1 has a few chairs and benches for waiting but no real dining area. Menu options include St. Paul sandwiches, chop suey, chow mein and numerous combination plates. Specialties include Mongolian beef, hot braised chicken and shrimp with lobster sauce. A-1 does have a parking lot adjacent to the building, and a small surcharge on credit cards.
    Andria's Steakhouse-Chesterfield
    The second location of the popular O'Fallon, Illinois, restaurant brings classic steak-house charm - and Andria's famous steak sauce - to west county. The menu is traditional steak-house cuisine: shrimp cocktail, baked potato and lots and lots of steak. Strip and rib-eye steaks bring a great balance of flavor and tenderness. All steaks, as well as the mammoth pork chop, are brushed with the legendary sauce. Though not cheap, Andria's is more casual and value-minded than many old-school steakhouses: Entrées come with a side and a large salad, and feel free to wear jeans.
    Araka
    Steven Caravelli, formerly executive chef at Hubert Keller's steak house Sleek, now mans the kitchen at Araka. The menu retains a focus on the cuisines of Europe's Mediterranean coast, though Caravelli intends to home in on local produce and sustainable meat and seafood. New dishes include seared diver scallops with pork belly and a quail egg, a "duo" of local beef and a "tartare" made from beets. Standard and vegetarian tasting menus are available.
    Asia
    Asia reflects only a sliver of the titular continent's size and cultural variety. Instead it focuses on those countries many might think of when they hear the phrase "Asian cuisine": China, Japan, Vietnam and Thailand. Sushi is prepared well, though the fish itself is merely good, not outstanding. Entrées lean toward Chinese and Chinese-American dishes like General Tso's chicken; house specialties include Peking duck and an excellent Cornish hen dish. The Cornish hen is one of the few values on a relatively high-priced menu.
    Atlas Restaurant & Lunch Room
    Like a fine Bordeaux, Atlas grows richer and more noble with each year. The menu is timeless, with attention paid to the quality of ingredients and meticulous preparation rather than pizzazz and the latest trends. Dishes change seasonally, but you'll certainly find excellent lamb and pork dishes as well as a fish of the day and vegetarian selections. The steak frites, a staple, is the best in town.
    Balaban's
    A homage to the late, iconic Central West End restaurant. Owner Steve McIntyre, a long-time owner of the original Balaban's, has fashioned this new edition as a more casual restaurant serving mostly small plates. These include both classic Balaban's dishes - cucumber bisque, beef Wellington - and familiar bistro fare. The best bet might be the flatbread pizza, especially the version with spinach, fontina cheese and caramelized onion. This Balaban's also sells retail wine and offers carryout meals.
    Bar Louie-Central West End
    Is Bar Louie a swank cocktail lounge or a neighborhood bar and grill? Depends on when you show up. The Chicago-based chain occupies a massive space in the Central West End, and when it's filled with the young and the beautiful on a weekend night, it's got spark. Stop by for lunch or an early dinner, though, and you may feel lonely. Stick with the basics: sandwiches, burgers and fish tacos. Chase your meal with a beer or martini and watch the pretty people play.
    BARcelona Tapas Restaurant
    One of the St. Louis area's first Spanish tapas restaurants, BARcelona specializes in small plates that pack a big punch. Housemade sangria, quick service and a festive atmosphere make this place a favorite among the happy-hour crowd.
    Bartolino's Osteria
    The new location of a St. Louis institution: The original dates back to 1969, and its founder's roots go back even further. The new space is large, with a simple, rustic elegance and a casual ambiance. The extensive menu features the upscale Italian-American dishes much loved (sometimes to an unfathomable degree) in this area: grilled pork chops; pastas in thick sauces. Presentations can be impressive, including a caesar salad served as a tower of lettuce and a risotto served in a paper "cone" that looks like nothing so much as a giant piece of wrapped candy.
    Basil Spice
    A welcoming environment for the familiar pleasures of Thai cuisine. The staff is friendly, and the dishes are made with quality ingredients and thoughtful attention to detail. The menu features the expected lineup of curries, stir fries and fried-rice dishes. Gang Mussa-Muhn Nuah curry, with peanuts as well as pineapple chunks and tamarind juice is sweet, tart and delicious. The traditional Tom Kha Gai soup is very good. The menu includes a dozen vegetarian dishes and a weekday lunch special.
    BB's Jazz, Blues & Soups
    In a town with as many blues enthusiasts as St. Louis, the question of which blues club is best can be a topic of spirited discussion. BB's Jazz, Blues and Soups inhabits a historic brick buildings that oozes atmosphere, and it offers a first-rate selection of local and touring performers. BB's features a varied schedule of musical acts, a large year-round seating capacity and full-service kitchen specializing in Cajun and Creole food, in addition to a selection of American bar food.
    BC's Kitchen
    Well-known local chef Bill Cardwell (Cardwell's at the Plaza) and his business partner and executive chef John Kennealy bring modern city dining to the exurbs. Handsome and smoothly run, BC's Kitchen offers generous portions of typical New American bistro fare - short ribs, pork chops, roasted chicken - all of it prepared with the utmost attention to detail. The St. Louis-cut spare ribs are a highlight, the meat more than flavorful enough to stand up to a smoky, tangy barbecue sauce. And Cardwell crafts one of the best burgers in town, with blue and cheddar cheese, bacon and a spicy-sweet tomato relish far superior to ketchup.
    Bici Cafe
    A neighborhood restaurant with a menu overseen by (very) prominent - and (very) busy - local chef Mike Johnson. Dishes draw inspiration from Mediterranean cuisines, not only European, but also North African and Middle Eastern. Crab cakes are spiced with za'atar and served with a harissa aioli; falafel is served in bite-size "popcorn" form. The menu is dominated by small plates, but there are also sandwiches, soups and flatbread pizzas, as well as a few pasta dishes and traditional entrées. Weather permitting, the patio is a popular seat.
    Big Bear Grill-Warson Woods
    Like its older sister in Wildwood, the Warson Woods location of Big Bear Grill brings the hunting lodge to you - complete with fireplace and a bear skin on the wall. Diners don't have to catch their own fish to enjoy it, with catfish, walleye and salmon among the options. Other choices include burgers, sandwiches and wraps, but for the non-sporting type, there are also about a half-dozen salads.
    Big Chief Roadhouse
    Travelers along Route 66 just west of St. Louis were able to spend a night in one of the longest and largest motels of the time, the Big Chief Highway Hotel, where hungry drivers could dine at one of the few full-service restaurants along the road. The Transcontinental Highway is no more, nor is the large hotel, but the Big Chief Roadhouse, where cross-country travelers once dined, still remains. With an updated menu, modern patrons can enjoy burgers, pasta and several specialty pizzas. The Big Chief also has a kids' menu and nightly dinner specials.
    Biggie's
    A neighborhood bar & grill in the finest St. Louis tradition. The pork chop is the trademark dish: It weighs in at one pound and requires 25 minutes to cook. Burgers and sandwiches are satisfying, especially the veal parm. The menu includes steaks, seafood and Italian dishes, including pizza, in the Provel-intensive St. Louis style. (Not a fan of T-ravs? Biggie's might convert you.) Barbecue ribs are the weekend specialty. The atmosphere is friendly, and there's more sports memorabilia on the walls than you could study in a dozen visits.
    Blackberry Cafe
    Most coffeehouses pour a good, strong cup of joe. Others have great atmosphere, and a few serve appealing food. Blackberry, a hangout that's popular among Washington University undergrads, delivers all three. Blackberry's espressos and lattes go down smooth and sock you with enough caffeine to keep you wide-eyed as you bang out that overdue lit paper. And you won't have to exist on java alone: Blackberry has a surprisingly extensive menu of Mediterranean and American fare, such as hummus, baba ghanouj, tabbouleh, wraps, pizzas and sandwiches.
    Blueberry Hill
    A true St. Louis landmark, Blueberry Hill has been a hotspot in the Delmar Loop for over 40 years. With pop culture memorabilia lining every nook and cranny, jukeboxes, dart leagues and toys on display, there's fun to be had by people of all ages. The menu features classic American fare like burgers, sandwiches, house-made soups and salads with vegetarian specialties as well. A late night menu is offered after 9 p.m., which includes some daytime favorites in addition to breakfast food. The extensive bar stocks 63 bottled beers and 18 draught taps, both local and imported. With multiple stages spanned across an impressive square footage, Blueberry Hill has plenty of room for touring and local bands alike. The restaurant is open every day of the year for lunch and into the wee hours of the morning, from 11-1:30 a.m.
