Edwardsville's 222 Artisan Bakery offers more than the grab-it-and-go options typical of many coffee shop/bakery combos. Within the small, unassuming cafe lies an extensive menu, including sandwiches such as tuna, chicken salad and a create-your-own option, allowing diners to select their choice of bread, cheese, meat, spreads (tapenade, aioli and mayo, to name a few) and veggies. 222 also has pizza Fridays, another opportunity for diners to let their creative juices flow and select from such toppings at feta cheese and andouille sausage.

At Benito's Gelato, a rainbow of creamy, bright-colored ribbons of gelato keeps cool behind the glass counter. Made fresh each day by slowly freezing all the ingredients, the gelato at Benito's comes in a variety of available flavors of fresh fruits, nuts, chocolates and liqueurs. Espresso and coffee drinks are also available.
The beloved St. Louis institution has received a 21st-century makeover. Its new location in the Central West End's Maryland Plaza is a sleek, modern dessert bar. The menu divides desserts into light-, medium- and full-bodied selections. The last group offers a chocolate terrine as dense as a neutron star and a surprisingly good version of the ubiquitous flourless chocolate cake. Medium-bodied desserts include a silky chocolate pot de crème, and the standout among the light-bodied desserts is a smooth, cooling milk chocolate semi freddo. You can try selected Bissinger's chocolates in "Confection Flights," and several liqueurs are available as shots served in a cup made of chocolate.
Leanna Russo isn't the biggest fan of eating sugar and sweets, but that doesn't mean her Benton Park bakery isn't topnotch. In fact, a light hand with the sweet stuff is what makes Russo's pastries so darn good. The lemon meringue torte with a pine-nut crust and browned Swiss meringue is a lovely blend of sweet and tart with a savory backbeat. Be sure to try the peanut-butter bar, which knocks Reese's out of the park. Savory dishes, including a daily lunch special and made-from-scratch biscuits topped with peppery sausage gravy, are also available.
