The Crow’s Nest in Maplewood offers a laid back atmosphere without slacking in the kitchen or bar. The food menu offers plentiful options for both meat lovers (burgers, meat loaf, deep fried deviled eggs, french dip) and vegetarians (chili served in a pretzel bowl, house-made veggie burger, grilled cheese sandwich with apple compote and honey). The Crow’s Nest also has Metal Brunch on Sundays from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. with all the old favorites: eggs benedict, french toast, omelets, breakfast tacos and burgers made with “the blackest of angus beef,” in addition to chicken and waffles and a veggie slinger. The Crow’s Nest has a slew of daily drink specials and weekly events. Happy hour is every Sunday through Thursday from 4-6 p.m., offering specials like $1 off draft beers, $2 PBR tall boys and $2 Stag pints. Weekly events include Arbitrary Judgment on Monday nights, a “completely absurd” trivia game hosted by RFT favorite Kenny Snarzyk, sponsored by Four Hands and therefore resulting in cheap pints. Gingham's full menu include standard breakfast items, as well as sandwiches, burgers and hearty entree items, such as country fried steak and spaghetti and meatballs.
Brought to you by In Good Company, the local partnership behind Cafe Ventana, Sanctuaria and Diablitos Cantina, Hendricks BBQ enters the St. Charles market in a big — 17,000 square feet covering two levels — way. The sheer size of the place (slated to be a live-music venue and moonshine distillery, to boot) might be overwhelming, but chef Chris Lee and pitmaster Matt Vanderbeck make sure the focus is squarely on the food. Barbecue, smoked over apple and hickory wood, includes baby-back and St. Louis-cut spare ribs, beef brisket, pulled pork, turkey and sausage. If you like sauce, Hendricks’ “STL” is your best bet: complex, with just a little heat. Collard greens with bacon and grits with cheddar cheese are the can’t-miss sides. Consider trying the fried chicken, either by itself or smothered with gravy in an open-face sandwich.
Mama Josephine is owner Mary Samuelson's dear departed mother, and the recipes at this small, charming restaurant in the Shaw neighborhood are hers. This is home cookin', by way of Louisiana and with a nod to Italy. The lasagna is eight layers high, with a sauce simmered for eight hours that you will praise eight ways to Sunday. The chicken is pan-fried for a crisp, flavorful crust, and the meat loaf is as dense as the St. Louis humidity. Sides include vibrantly yellow mac & cheese, turnip greens and fried corn.
With 40,000 square feet to play with, Plush is a truly unique bar, restaurant, and music venue located just east of Grand Center in Midtown. You can sit down most nights of the week and enjoy a menu full of eclectic American food that borders on greasy spoon but with modern twists (meatloaf cupcakes, for example). Dinner and lunch are served from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, with kitchen hours extending to 1 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. And Brunch lovers can hit up Plush on Sundays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Whichever meal you choose, a variety of coffee and espresso drinks, as well as a full selection of beers, wines, and cocktails are available. Plush’s venue side has music several nights each week, while the second floor houses a smaller room for more intimate shows along with pool and ping-pong tables. Plush also has two spaces - a second-floor parlor and the building’s fourth-floor penthouse – both available for private events. RFT named Plush the "Best New Bar" in 2012, and things have only gotten better for this jack-of-all-trades, one-of-a-kind establishment.
A homegrown fast-casual sandwich joint. Its branding suggests eventual worldwide chain-restaurant domination, but for now Sammy Scott's prides itself on house-roasted meats, house-baked breads and delicious homemade soups. (The cream of tomato soup is topnotch, velvety smooth and bursting with flavor.) The sandwiches don't reinvent the wheel - and that's just dandy when you bite into a panini with delicious roast beef, Swiss, mushrooms, perfectly caramelized onions and a snappy horseradish sauce. Other standouts include the "barbecue" pork panini and a "caprese" sandwich with the addition of red onion and basil.
