The Eames Era

When was the last time you looked at the ingredients on a pack of bubblegum? They're fairly complicated for such a sweet, passing pleasure: maltitol, gum base, glycerol, carnauba wax and (of course) Yellow 5. Likewise, you could classify the Eames Era as bubblegum -- a genre that, like its namesake, has many intricate and carefully tempered parts. On its The Second E.P. , four brief songs nail the recipe, mixing chug-a-lug chords, innocuous guitar lines and the occasional vocal liftoff. Lead singer Ashlin Phillips would make a great understudy to Rilo Kiley's Jenny Lewis, as she conveys that singer's mix of saccharine sweetness and spit-in-your-eye sauciness. Although the Eames Era comes off a bit glossy in places, beneath the sheen rests a foundation of clever, catchy rock & roll. Hopes are high for the band's debut full-length, Double Dutch, due out this fall.
