Bowl for a great cause at the "Roll of Dimes" fundraiser this Sunday

Rarely do you come across a win-win situation, but that's exactly what you'll find at the first annual March of Dimes "Roll of Dimes" fundraiser on Sunday, August 15, at the Brunswick Zone Chesterfield bowling alley (176 Four Seasons Shopping Center, Olive Boulevard and Highway 141; 314-469-6550). This event's a guaranteed doozy, because 50 bucks gets you and four friends three games of bowling, Quiznos subs, Fitz's root beer, T-shirts, shoe rental and a goodie bag.

So who's the other winner? What's that other reason to attend? Says event spokeswoman Corrie Hendrix: "People should go because the March of Dimes is an organization that affects everybody, whether they know it or not. [Its] research over the years has saved a lot of us, and [it] will continue to do that." Indeed, the March of Dimes was instrumental in helping develop a vaccine for polio, and since 1960 the charity has funded research and programs that have helped save babies from birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. We were all babies once (perhaps some of us still are), and we may even have babies of our own one day, so the March of Dimes is a highly relevant charity that deserves all the support it can get.

But back to bowling. Man, bowling is the best! Seriously: How many times have you been out with friends and looking for something to do other than going to the same old bars? Inevitably, some sage suggests, "Let's go bowling!" It happens every time, because knocking down pins is eternally fun -- it doesn't matter how deep your skills run or how intoxicated you may be. Bowling is like ice cream: Everyone loves it.

Everyone loves prizes too, so the Roll of Dimes also features a silent auction and a raffle with items ranging from gift certificates to signed St. Louis sporting memorabilia. Your chance to win is from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m.; call 314-628-0200, extension 305, for more information on how to purchase tickets.
