Pilgrim's Progress

The Kids in the Hall claimed bass players were the loser in every band more than a decade ago, but comic book creator Bryan Lee O'Malley takes the opposite position. Without a doubt, his Scott Pilgrim is the coolest bass-playing, between-jobs slacker in Toronto. In the beginning, life was simple and easy for Scott Pilgrim — he had a girlfriend, a roommate, good friends and a band. But after meeting the rollerblading Ramona V. Flowers, his world is turned upside down. In order for him to date his dream girl he has to defeat her seven evil ex-boyfriends. O'Malley's books have taken the comic world by storm and will no doubt spread to the rest of the world, thanks to Edgar Wright's forthcoming film adaption, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, which stars Michael Cera as Scott. The newest volume in the series, Scott Pilgrim's Finest Hour, brings the saga to a close with the final battle between Scott and the last of Ramon's exes. Star Clipper (6392 Delmar Boulevard, University City; 314-725-9110 or www.starclipper.com) hosts a special midnight release party for the book starting at 11 p.m. tonight. Superfun Yeah Yeah Rocketship will debut a new song, "My Finest Hour," and film a video for same, and at midnight you can purchase the new book. Admission is free and so are the snacks, but bring money to get your Pilgrim fix.
